Simply gazing at Gangneung’s beautiful sea isn’t enough.
Embrace the excitement of soaring above the water with thrilling activity experiences in Gangneung.
At the end of Anmokhaebyeon Beach, famous for its coffee street, a towering structure equivalent to a five-story building catches the eye. This is “Aranaby Zipline,” a facility connecting directly to Namhangjinhaebyeon Beach. “Ara“ is an old Korean word for sea, and “naby“ means butterfly. Hence, the name “Aranaby” signifies flying gracefully over the beautiful sea like a butterfly.

The Aranaby ticket booth and starting point are located at Namhangjinhaebyeon Beach. Just cross the “Solbaram Bridge” that links Anmokhaebyeon Beach and Namhangjinhaebyeon Beach to find the ticket booth.
The zipline originated from a transportation method used by tropical indigenous people to carry supplies over the jungle, avoiding wild animals. With Aranaby Zipline, you can experience the sensation of flying over the sky and sea using the wire set between Anmokhaebyeon Beach and Namhangjinhaebyeon Beach. The round-trip distance is 600 meters, and the experience lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. This eco-friendly, zero-emission sport is popular worldwide.
For an even more exhilarating experience, try Badahaneul Sky Bike over the sea. This magical activity lets you ride a bike while flying above the water. The facility is right next to the Aranaby Zipline starting point.
Badahaneul Sky Bike moves by pedaling, making it another zero-emission eco-tourism activity. Its structure allows even those who can’t ride a bike to enjoy the experience. Firmly secured with wires above and below, as long as you pedal diligently, you will move forward.
The initial descent to the midpoint doesn’t require pedaling, but after that, it’s an uphill climb where you need to pedal hard. Shifting your weight forward during the uphill section makes it easier to pedal.
With separate wires for the Badahaneul Sky Bike above and the Aranaby Zipline below, it feels like performing aerial acrobatics over the sea. Note that both activities are available only as a round-trip course, starting at Namhangjinhaebyeon Beach and returning from Anmokhaebyeon Beach. There’s a combo option to experience both Aranaby Zipline and Badahaneul Sky Bike, so why not try both? Enjoy a unique adventure flying over the sea, combining fun and thrill.

Gangneung, the Kiteboarding Paradise
On windy, sunny days, Songjeonghaebyeon Beach in Gangneung is filled with people enjoying kiteboarding. This thrilling sport combines a kite with a board, allowing enthusiasts to race across the sea while holding onto a large kite similar to a paraglider. When the kite catches the wind and soars high, the rider harnesses that power to jump into the air, effectively riding the waves and flying through the sky.
Also known as kite surfing, this sport has gained recognition as an official event in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Gangneung’s beaches, with their ideal wind conditions and deep waters, are perfect for kiteboarding. Songjeonghaebyeon Beach, in particular, is renowned as a kiteboarding hotspot. On bright weekends, the sight of colorful kites soaring in the sky and riders speeding across the water is spectacular.
While the equipment for kiteboarding is expensive, leading most enthusiasts to own their gear rather than rent, it still offers great enjoyment for spectators. Even if you can’t participate, watching the skilled kiteboarders is an exciting experience.
Every year, Songjeonghaebyeon Beach hosts the Gangneung Kiteboarding Association Korea Cup. This year’s event kicks off at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, and continues through Sunday, June 23, bringing together kiteboarding enthusiasts from across the country to compete. Watching the kiteboarding competition promises to be a thrilling spectacle.
