Most travelers begin their journey to Gangneung with its beautiful sea. However, Gangneung also boasts stunning forests. The forests of Gangneung are made even more special by the majestic red pines that stretch tall toward the sky, a symbol of Gangneung. Solhyang Arboretum is the only place in Korea that is themed around pine trees. A light walk through the lush forest, greeted by the sounds of water flowing through scenic valleys and the vibrant spring flowers, will refresh your spirit.
Opened in 2013, Solhyang Arboretum spans approximately 78.5 hectares with 23 diverse themes. Situated on Chilseongsan Mountain, home to a large natural population of red pines, it showcases the pristine beauty of a natural forest. Visitors can explore various attractions such as the ecological observation trail, healing paths, plazas, forest playgrounds, wildflower gardens, rock gardens, and a tropical greenhouse, each offering seasonal delights.
From the entrance, the arboretum is adorned with a profusion of flowers in red, yellow, and other colors, captivating visitors year-round. There are three trails, ranging 2–3 kilometers round trips, which can be enjoyed within an hour.
The chirping of mountain birds and the babbling of the valley stream add a refreshing touch to your walk. Washing your hands or dipping your feet in the clear stream water flowing through stepping stones will cool you down. In the summer, the clear valley water, with its visible bottom, becomes a much-anticipated playground for children.
Stroll along the forest ecological observation trail, made of flat wooden decks, making it easy for anyone to walk. Benches and tables are available along the way for rest, allowing you to take your time and enjoy the green surroundings. Each deep breath you take fills you with the invigorating essence of the forest.
The red pine, Korea’s representative tree species, is known as the “King of Trees” for its red, upright trunk and majestic appearance. It emits a significant amount of phytoncides, which are known to help relieve stress.
The wide grassy area surrounded by dense pine trees is popular among visitors. Capture memorable moments with family, friends, or loved ones at a photo zone with topiary sculptures of cute animals.
If you’re with children, spend time at the forest playground. Kids can run, climb, slide, and roll around in the nature-friendly playground, and they might be lucky enough to spot a squirrel passing by.
Recently, a tropical botanical garden opened at the far end of the arboretum. This unique space allows you to see palm trees and is designed with a multilevel interior. With tables and chairs, it offers a café-like atmosphere.
Experience a touch of camping in the rest areas set amid the pine forest. At night, enjoy the illuminated forest paths. The beautiful scenery created by the lights in the dark forest awaits you at Solhyang Arboretum.
