Autumn is the perfect season for coffee. Increasingly chilly winds, nature's deepening colors, and contemplative moments reflecting on busy days all call for a warm, rich cup of coffee. If you're planning an autumn trip, why not enjoy it with coffee? In Gangneung, the city of coffee, discover a museum that tells "all about coffee."
Terarosa started in 2002 as a coffee roastery. They personally visited coffee-producing regions worldwide to select high-quality specialty beans, delivering coffee with exceptional taste. With its unique "factory-style café" concept and antique atmosphere, Terarosa left a deep impression on visitors and emerged as a landmark of Gangneung.
The name “Terarosa” means "red earth" in Italian and "land of hope" in Portuguese—both symbolizing land where coffee thrives. Fittingly, the main branch's exterior is covered in red bricks, beautifully contrasted by green ivy and chestnut forests that enhance Terarosa's unique sensibility and charm.
While Terarosa now has branches in Seoul, Jeju, Gyeongju, and more, only at the Gangneung main branch can you enjoy a special experience: the Terarosa Museum. Guided tours are held every hour from 10 AM to 5 PM daily and last 40-50 minutes. Each session admits only 15 people on a first-come, first-served basis, so phone reservations are recommended over walk-ins. (Groups of 15 or more should inquire at least 2 days in advance)
Tour tickets can be purchased at the Terarosa Museum Art Shop, where you can also buy beans from various origins, Terarosa merchandise, various handmade products, and coffee tree seedlings. It's the perfect place to look around while waiting before your tour starts or to purchase souvenirs afterward.
The museum features three exhibition rooms, including the main exhibition room. Photography is prohibited except in designated areas permitted by guides.
Exhibition Room 1 welcomes visitors with a video of a journey to coffee-producing regions to purchase green beans. Then, one wall opens like a door, followed by an exhibition expressing coffee harvesting and processing through artwork. These aren't mere informational pictures but artworks conveying hidden stories of coffee.
Exhibition Room 2 showcases coffee's origins and the history of roasting, grinding, and extraction at a glance.
Particularly, Terarosa's long-collected antique roasters and grinder collection demonstrates the world's love for coffee across eras. Additionally, this section allows visitors to peer through glass walls into the factory—observing every detail from bean selection to roasting and packaging.
Finally, the Main Exhibition Room offers a tasting experience of three specialty coffees, inviting you to discover your coffee preferences and refine your appreciation for quality coffee. Adjacent is a greenhouse where coffee trees grow—open to visitors who wish to observe the plants and their cherries up close.
The Terarosa Museum is a rare place that reveals the entire process until a cup of coffee arrives before us. After the tour, your daily coffee may never look the same again—each sip feeling precious to the very last drop.
