Gangneung is located in the middle of the Taebaek Mountains, the waist of the Korean Peninsula, to the east of the mountain range. It borders the East Sea to the east, Nae-myeong in Hongcheon-gun and Jinbu-myeon and Daegwallyeong-myeon in Pyeongchang-gun to the west, and Hyeonbuk-myeon and Hyeonnam-myeon in Yangyang-gun to the north.
The 77.61km-long coastline adjacent to the East Sea occupies 17.7% of the 438.22 km of Gangwon-do Province’s coastline. The western part of the city is adjacent to the Taebaek Mountains, with peaks reaching over 1,000 m, including Odaesan, Daegwallyeong, and Seokbyeongsan. There are three mountain axes toward the east, and the Namdaecheon Stream flows through the center.
