Infinite Possibilities of Gangneung where Business,Culture and Tourism meet.
- Establishing a Tourism City through Diverse Tourism Infrastructure Development -
Gangneung City (Major Kim Hong-gyu) this year announced its plan to actively promote tourism development projects under the theme ‘A True Tourism City, Creating Gangneung’ with the goal of ‘establishing a tourism city through diverse tourism infrastructure development’.
Gangneung City is preparing to diversify tourism content by completing stay-based tourism infrastructure, establishing natural, cultural, and experience-oriented leisure facilities and family landmark-style accommodation for relaxing and healing. This aligns with changes in tourism trends for 2025, such as gastronomy and experience-oriented travel, strengthening natural and cultural experiences, family and memory-making oriented travel, wellness and relaxation-oriented travel, and increased personalized and customized travel.
Accordingly, Gangneung City will launch the Gyeongpo Lake Water Quality Improvement Project to enhance the lake’s water quality and secure tourism resources, as Gyeongpo serves as the core of Gangneung tourism, significantly impacting the city’s economy. In addition, the Gyeongpo Lake Fountain will be at the center of the plan to make the Gyeongpo area a world-class theme park by adding surrounding tourism infrastructure such as Fantasy Lake, Moonlight Art Show, and an observation deck.
Notably, the Gyeongpo Lake Water Quality Improvement Project (Gyeongpo Lake Fountain Installation Project) was selected by Gangneung’s residents as the project that should be pursued as top-priority for creating a year-round stay-based tourism city in the “2024 Gangneung City Policy Survey”.
In addition, Gangneung City plans to complete the Ojukheon Traditional Boat Ride, Anmok Jukdobong Sky Valley, and Tongil (‘Reunificiation’) Park Sky Forest Observatory, increasing the number of attractions to see and do for revitalizing stay-based tourism and focusing administrative capabilities on Daegwallyeong Cable Car, Northern Cable Car, Jeongdong Beach Train and Anbo Mountain Trail Complex to build a city where visitors can enjoy tourism anytime, anywhere.
Furthermore, the city plans to support this revitalization of stay-based tourism by establishing criteria for the development of designated tourist areas, easing regulations to encourage private investment, and finalizing Olympic Special Zone tourism accommodation facilities, attracting new projects through special zone development initiatives.
Gangneung Major Kim Hong-gyu stated, “We will make Gangneung a city that people always want to visit and can enjoy themselves everywhere, increasing tourist spending through stay-based tourism and striving for Gangneung to become a leading city in the tourism industry.”
