In Korea, there are four-year colleges and two-or three-year junior colleges. Generally, at four-year colleges, students study their majors instead of receiving vocational education, while two-year colleges train students on vocational skills. Students wishing to enter college can apply for non-scheduled admission, which is granted based on the student record, essay, and practical skills, or for regular admission, which is granted based on the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) results. Since the admission requirements vary depending on the school, admission type, and quota, students should apply after reviewing the admission guidelines presented by the colleges they plan on applying to. Some colleges grant admission specifically to children of multicultural families, and foreigners whose parents are both foreigners and overseas Korean nationals, foreigners, and marriage immigrants who have completed all the school curricula equivalent to Korean elementary and secondary education in a foreign country can apply for the ′special admission for overseas Korean nationals and foreigners.′
Middle school education lasts for 3 years. Students are assigned to middle schools based on a lottery system, according to their area of residence and school district. In the case of regions where there is difficulty commuting due to the distance and/or transportation, students are assigned to schools according to the school district specified by the Superintendent of Education. Middle school education is compulsory and free, just like elementary school education. Parents must enroll their children in middle school allow them to attend until they graduate. If parents do not send their children to middle school, they may be fined.
