Infinite Possibilities of Gangneung where Business,Culture and Tourism meet.

There is a potato dish that represents Gangwon Province. Gamja ongsimi, which is created by pounding potatoes into small balls, has a plump and chewy texture that makes it a perfect meal for one. It's a terrific combination with gamja jeon (potato pancake) and makgeolli (Korean rice wine). Let's go to the "Byeongsan Ongsimi Village" now and have some ongsimi.

"Gangneung is the perfect location in Korea for potato cultivation."

Because of its large, well-drained fields, the Byeongsan-dong area is noted for producing high-quality potatoes. Since vitamin C in potatoes is not easily destroyed by heat, 70-80% of it remains even when formed into ongsimi (potato balls) or jeok (pancakes). Potatoes can also help decrease cholesterol and prevent constipation. Polyphenol molecules also aid digestion and have anti-cancer qualities. They also help to keep the blood clean, which helps to prevent high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, and anemia.

Potato pancakes, which were utilized as a substitute for wheat pancakes due to a lack of wheat flour, make an excellent snack, while potato ongsimi have become a Gangneung delicacy as a meal in itself. Summer in Gangneung was gorgeous three to four decades ago, with little awnings on the streets along the Namdaecheon embankment road, and people making potato pancakes.

On the winter solstice, when people counted the number of sticky rice balls in their red bean porridge, Gangneung utilized potatoes instead of sticky rice to form little balls called ongsimi. The potato balls were tastier than the sticky rice balls since they were plump and chewy. Because potatoes were plentiful in this location, people could eat them regularly, and they were also good for nutrition and health. These little balls are known as "ongsimi" in Gangneung. Potatoes are crushed and combined with ingredients and sweet bean paste before being boiled in an anchovy or kelp broth to make gamja ongsimi. When the chewy and flavorful gamja ongsimi gained popularity, an Ongsimi Village was formed in the Byeongsan-dong area.

It is also known as gamja-jeon or gamja-buchim, a dish produced by shredding potatoes and mixing them with various veggies before thinly frying them. Gangneung potatoes are crisp, with a lot of white powder and a wonderful flavor. Gamja jeok prepared from these potatoes is particularly chewy and flavorful, and it is well recognized as a representative local cuisine.
